We all chase dreams and strive for a better life for being happy, but what if the key to true happiness isn’t about achieving more, but recognising and feeling content with what we already have? When you are already happy your actions and reactions lead to fulfilling your dreams. Today’s story is about Amod, a farmer , appreciating what he has already got.
In a small beautiful village, there lived a farmer. His name was Amod. Even though Amod had just a small piece of land, he worked hard passionately, with strong commitment and felt happy and content with what he had.
Once a rich merchant visited his village for some business purpose. He had to stay there for a couple of days. He noticed Amod and his family happily working in the fields. He was amazed by how well those fields were taken care of. The crops looked fantastic, and Amod seemed so happy, full of life and energy, singing as he worked. He was quite impressed by the beauty of the fields and happy faces of his family members.
Being the chatty type the merchant couldn’t resist and started talking to him, He wanting to know why he was so happy. “Your fields are not the largest, nor your crops the most abundant, still there is a glow of contentment about you and your family,” the merchant remarked. Amod smiled warmly. He invited the merchant to sit under the shade of a banyan tree near his fields. With a twinkle in his eyes, he told him that true wealth lies not in abundance my friend, but in contentment.” moreover it is in the contentment of your efforts you put in in every aspect of your daily life..
The merchant asked him – what about your dreams and ambitions. “Don’t you desire more money and big things in life?”
Amod told him that his dreams are simple. He wants a a life full of laughter and love, with the people he love and care about. When he has some quiet time to think, like watching the sunset over the fields, He feels good knowing he has got everything he needs. Its not compulsory to have all fancy things to be happy. Amod waved his hand towards his crops, which were tall and green, swaying in the wind.
He told that every morning, when he wakes up he feels grateful for the good things the earth and universe gives us. He feels thankful for the chance to grow food not only for him but for so many other people around.
He is not happy just because he gets a lot of harvest, but because he loves taking care of his land. A happy heart puts more care into the work, and the land rewards that care with a bountiful harvest. That way, he not only has enough to feed his family but also some extra to sell at market, which brings a little more comfort and security.”
So, when the merchant left Amod he took with him the appreciation for the simple things in life, the knowledge that real satisfaction and happiness comes from the feeling – I am enough, I have enough, not needing more and more stuff to feel happy.
True happiness stems from within, rooted in gratitude, simplicity, service, connection, and personal growth. May we all find contentment in our lives.
